New Symantec Anti-Virus

Posted by Josh Mayer on May 12th, 2008

The campus has upgraded to a newer version of Symantec anti-virus known as Symantec Endpoint. For more information about Endpoint check out this link -> Endpoint Info

Once again, it is provided free of charge to UW peeps. To download the newest version click here (you’ll need a net id and password)-> Free Endpoint Download

It is recommended that everyone upgrade, since Endpoint is the only supported version by DoIT.

Windows XP Service Pack 3

Posted by Paul Gunther on May 7th, 2008

Service Pack 3 was re-released (see previous posting) - for now we’re advising holding off due to conflicts and issues many users have noted. Be careful - Microsoft is automatically pushing it out on Automatic Updates. Let us know if you have any issues if you upgrade (on purpose or not!).

More Info-

Apparently, if you have IE7 installed, and install SP3, you will no longer be able to uninstall IE7.  That option will be greyed out in Control Panel-Add Remove Programs.   So, if you want to remain flexible, and need SP3, you probably want to first uninstall IE7, upgrade to XPSP3 and then install IE7 again so you can uninstall IE7 at a later date.  Eccch.  Why not just use an OS that doesn’t make you jump through all these hoops?

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Delayed

Posted by Josh Mayer on May 1st, 2008

The highly anticipated Windows XP SP3 was released, and then removed and delayed on April 29. There seem to be compatibility issues with some dynamic retail sales software. An issue that won’t affect most of us, but proved concern enough for removal.

You can read more about the delay here.
